Mutants & Masterminds After the Game
Well, I had more people than I thought I would show for the game. We started about 4pm in the afternoon and by the end of the day (around midnight), I think we were comfortable with the combat resolution. Lots of feats to remember! One of the guys ran a martial artist- type who became more effective as the game went along simply because he was remembering his feats and how they came into play.
I’ve kept this opening scenario very simple so that we could focus on how combat works. A mastermind has hired various villians to test the local heroes and gather info on them. Our heroes have figured this out, but for what reason and who? They have no idea.
It’s was interesting to run as most of the group has very little background in RPGs. A couple of the guys played Champions with me WAY back in the 80’s/ 90s when I ran that for about 8 years, so I’ve been pretty pleased with the mix. The new guys are coming up with good ideas and the “old timers” aren’t dominating the table. So far , so good.
If the interest maintains, I’ll keep running. I have to say, I enjoyed running Fantasy Hero quite a bit, so I’m leaving it up to the players which they perfer.
Creating Characters for Mutants & Masterminds
Six of us got together last night for a group character build session. Now, I’ve played M&M, but I’ve never run it and when I did play it, I played a character that was already built for me. As it happens, I know more about the system than anyone else in the group.
So, everyone had a pretty good idea about what they wanted to play along with some rough write ups. Fortunately, I had bought HeroLab a few weeks ago. For those out of the loop, Herolab is a computer program that assists with character generation for vaious RPGs (M&M, Pathfinder, d20, Wite Wolf and a few others).
Man, am I glad I bought it. It made creating characters very easy. One of the guys was so impressed, that I think he’s going to be picking it up. We created 5 characters in about three and a half hours and that included the usual BS, drinking, talk and such that is the norm. It is an excellent program and even allows you to save the character as a PDF. It was such a help that I think everyone is even more excited about starting the game than before.
Gearing up for the Game
After a week of battling fleas, I finally find time to do some work on the Mutants & Masterminds game I’m going to run. I met with a couple of the guys last night and gave out copies of the rules along with some campaign guidelines (when I run a game, I always try to have multiple copies of the rules available).
I think it will be interesting to see what kind of characters they come up with as some of the guys have never played a supers game before. I have a long term plan for the game in mind, but we all know about the best laid plans thing.
I’ve also set up a forum for the players and am writting some background info on there (which, I’ll also share here later). I’ve never done a play by post, but with me only running this thing maybe once a month, I think being able to post stuff will help flesh out the game a bit. We’ll see how it goes.
A Whole Lot of Readin’
It’s been quite a week. First, I finally finished Aces & Eights and if I ever run another Western game (or continue the current one), I’d want to use Aces & Eights. I really like the feel of the game as well as having enjoyed reading all the background material in the book. Hell, I enjoyed it so much I ordered the cards and NPC book from FRPGames.
On top of that, I have the new Pathfinder Chronicles Campaign book. I currently working on getting it read and have found it a good read, so far. I enjoy most of what Pazio does so this was a no brainer for me to order. If I were to port my Fantasy Hero character here, she’d have grown up in Geb, I’m sure. Maybe I’ll do another video review of it once I’m done reading it.
Lastly, I’m trying to refresh myself on the in and outs of Mutants and Masterminds. It’s been a while sense I’ve run a supers game and I’ve only played M&M (years ago). I have decided to use it for my upcoming supers game, though. Something about the d20 is…soothing to those who have never played a supers game, I suppose. Plus, I like how quick the combat can be in this game.
