Fantasy Hero then….
Well, I ran our on/ off Fantasy Hero game last week. John D couldn’t make it to GM Golden Age Hero, so I stepped in. We’re playing SOMETHING, dang it! I’m using Hero’s Turakian setting and the group has made a big journey. It took them three weeks (game time) via ship to get to where they wanted to go.
The players are assisting a group of slowly growing rebels to become organized and attempt an overthrow of the oppressive mayor of the port city in the south of Vashkor (sound familiar? Anyone….anyone….). The players enjoyed the game, I feel and I thought it was a change of pace from dungeons/ bash and grab as the group had to use some tactics and plan in advance.
Now, it’s back to Golden Age this week. I have the next part of my Fantasy Hero adventure planned, just in case it’s needed, though….
Hero System 6th Edition Review
You know, I was going to write a review of the New Hero System 6th Edition and still may. However, it looks like James Gillen has taken the plunge, bought the PDFs and done a very fine review over at RPG.net. He sums up my concerns and opinions very well. If you’re interested in 6th Edition, I’d give his review a good read first.
Linkage-
DragonCon Day 1 Pt.2 Disappointment….
Well, the GM for my 1pm Godlike game (Operation Torch) no showed. It was the ONLY game I had signed up for at the con as I have been wanting to see it. Torch has been on the back burner at Arc Dream for so long, well too long in my opinion.
I did find Shane Ivey and spoke with him a bit. Things are looking pretty good for Arc Dream these days. Looks like the new Delta Green book will be out soon along with a second printing of the hardcover Wild Talents Second Edition (WT- Jan/Feb 2010).
Lots of people and cool costumes here. I’ll set up an album on Picasa later and have a link to my pix for everyone.
Wandered around the dealer area a bit. I did check out the new Ken Hite book for Hero System 6th edition (name escapes me, but it looked very good).
Dinner, then back to the con for a wrestling match (no lie). Said “Hi” to Raven. Then to the Cinematic Titanic room for “Blood of the Vampire” and questions afterwards. Frank says there will be new DVDs released later this year! Good news!
Going to GenCon
Yes, I’ve paid for the four day pass, so I am committed to going to my second GenCon. My last was about 8 years ago and I did not get to do much gaming. I’m planning on signing up for a few games this time, but I am committed to getting into the Dealers Room on Thursday (I DO want to pick up the Pathfinder RPG and Hero System 6th edition). The plan is to drive up from North Carolina on Wednesday and head out Sunday Morning. Just got to make it thru Summer.
The Book of the Dragon
Just got in the new Dragon book for Fantasy Hero (which, I will be running over the next two weeks). First reaction- HEY! It’s got a very good cover! Yes, for a change, a book from Hero Games is …..ATTRACTIVE! Wha Hoppened??!! Anyway, inside the book is a pot load of dragon types statted out for the Hero System along with other giant monster types (including a living castle, the God of Worms, the Snow Spire Golem and more). A 144 pages of some very good write ups for Fantasy Hero. I am very happy with this buy (with the small exception of no Index). I am, at the same time, very unhappy that my days of buying Hero books is about to come to an end.
This is just the type of book that Hero needs to be publishing, not yet another edition of Fantasy Hero or Star Hero. I’ll be keeping my eyes open for new material from Hero. Once it appears, they’ll be earning my hard earned dollars again.
It’s been a While
Wow, sorry for the long time away. It’s been very busy for me. Work, school and a bit of gaming thrown in. Hero Games has released their 2010 publication schedule. Very disappointed. Looks like I may be saving a bunch of money in ‘10.
Looks to be basically reprints of old books with the characters re-written for 6th edition (something I can do myself and save $$$). Errr…no thanks, give me new material and I might be interested. New Villians, new settings, new genres. Same old same old? You can have it, I’ve got it already.
More Fantasy Hero
Well, I ran Fantasy Hero this past Sunday and I have to say, I’ve missed running FH. I run it as kind of a “fill in” game when the regular GM (who is running Pulp Hero) can’t make it. Instead of running a “One Shot” I decided to start a rather long adventure. It may take all year to get thru this one, depending on how many times our regular GM can’t make it.
I purposely took out my own “PC” out of the adventure early on. I’m running an altered version of Wolfgang Baur’s Empire of the Ghouls and my PC is a Necromancer, so…. I just felt it would be better for her not to be there. I’ve streamlined the adventure and toned it down a bit for the points that the players are at, so I hope it will be an adventure that will last a bit and by the time they’re done they should be quite a kick butt group.
MaceCon
Been thinking about what to run at MaceCon in November. I’ve signed up to run Godlike and demo Aces & Eights. I usually just run one game at a con, but thought…what the hell. I’d like to keep some time open to play as well. I enjoy cons for the opportunity to play/ run something different. Haven’t really checked out this years offerings, but I’m hoping someone will run Spirit of the Century.
Hero Games is usually there in the form of Steve Long (as he lives about 30 miles away), so I assume he’ll run some kind of Hero System game. I played in the Pulp game he ran last year and had quite a bit of fun. It was interesting to see how he runs a Hero System game.
Request to GM a Supers Game
So, a couple of my friends have told me that if I were to GM a supers game, they would be interested in playing. It’s been a few years sense I’ve run one. I GMed a group playing Silver Age Sentinels up in Cincinnati, Ohio about 6 years ago.
Having ran Champions for a decade and various other supers games at cons, limited times, for playtest, etc. I’m finding it slow to get excited about doing it again. Also, I believe they’d want me to use the Hero System for it. Now, I do enjoy Hero. I’m having fun GMing Fantasy Hero, but my first thought was to use Mutants and Masterminds. I’ve played a little M&M and I just love how quick the combat is in it. Bottom line, I could use any system as the role playing is the thing. The thought of running a supers game is just taking a while to sink in.
