DragonCon Day 1 Pt.2 Disappointment….

Well, the GM for my 1pm Godlike game (Operation Torch) no showed. It was the ONLY game I had signed up for at the con as I have been wanting to see it. Torch has been on the back burner at Arc Dream for so long, well too long in my opinion.

I did find Shane Ivey and spoke with him a bit. Things are looking pretty good for Arc Dream these days. Looks like the new Delta Green book will be out soon along with a second printing of the hardcover Wild Talents Second Edition (WT- Jan/Feb 2010).

Lots of people and cool costumes here. I’ll set up an album on Picasa later and have a link to my pix for everyone.

Wandered around the dealer area a bit. I did check out the new Ken Hite book for Hero System 6th edition (name escapes me, but it looked very good).

Dinner, then back to the con for a wrestling match (no lie). Said “Hi” to Raven. Then to the Cinematic Titanic room for “Blood of the Vampire” and questions afterwards. Frank says there will be new DVDs released later this year! Good news!

GMing Godlike at MaceCon 12

I GMed Godlike this morning at MaceCon in High Point, NC. It was nice to see that my event was sold out.  I ran a Saipan scenario from 9am to 1pm. I had pregen characters and funny thing, the “coolest” character (atleast the players thought he was) wasn’t chosen until last ( a talent who had extraordinary pistol skills. He basically had a 10 die pool in pistols as well as “Go First” at a 3).

I thought it went very well and I thought the majority had fun (enough to where one of them was convinced the system was worth buying a copy of Godlike). A couple of guys didn’t really “get it”, but over all I’d say it was very much a success.

MaceCon, on the other hand, looks to be struggling this year. Lots of RPGs had only 1 to 3 people sign up with many having no one sign up. Just looking around I saw fewer attendees this year than last. The dealers room was….well, lacking. Lots of scarves, odd figures and weird stuff. Lots of tables left empty in the gaming area. I was told that on Friday only one of the 6 tables in the RPG gaming room was used. I noticed a con official acting very irate, slamming down a clipboard and looking disgusted. Just my observations.

Games I’d like to Play

Reading another blog got me to thinking. I’ve been pretty lucky having played a wide variety of genres. There are still some individual games I’d really like to play in a long term game, though.

Champions/ Mutants & Masterminds/ Godlike/ Wild Talents- Just about ANY supers game would do. The most I’ve ever played was a one shot DC Heroes game. I ran Champions for over 8 years back on the late 80s/ early 90s.

Sengoku- I love this game. I wouldn’t care if someone ran it using another system as I’m not a huge fan of Fusion. I’ve always had a strong interest in asian cultures. If someone ran this thing three times a week, I’d try to make every session.

D&D 4th/Pathfinder/Fantasy Hero- Yes, recently I played Fantasy Hero for about 9 months and played AD&D for over 6 years back in the 80s, but I’ve always wanted to get to the point where my character had some power. Almost got there with AD&D, but not quite. I’m very interested in having a character that would rule a city/ kingdom. Maybe one that would lead an army. Lower level stuff just doesn’t do it for me.

Spirit of the Century/ Pulp Hero- Well, we have done one session of Pulp Hero and I’m looking forward to more, but it always seems that pulp games end too soon for me. I’ve played a few at cons, but have never had the opportunity to play long term.

Delta Green- Hell yeah. Played for a few months about 9 years ago in Cincinnati, but have never found another game. I loves me some DG.

There are some others that interest me- Big Eyes Small Mouth, Heavy Gear, Dogs in the Vineyard, Qin, Reign, Burning Wheel… I will likely play these at cons as it seems most of the gamers in the area are transfixed by D&D (3.5, please. the only TRUE D&D…ahem). Running a game is not the same as playing the game, in my opinion, anyway.

MaceCon

Been thinking about what to run at MaceCon in November. I’ve signed up to run Godlike and demo Aces & Eights. I usually just run one game at a con, but thought…what the hell. I’d like to keep some time open to play as well. I enjoy cons for the opportunity to play/ run something different. Haven’t really checked out this years offerings, but I’m hoping someone will run Spirit of the Century.

Hero Games is usually there in the form of Steve Long (as he lives about 30 miles away), so I assume he’ll run some kind of Hero System game. I played in the Pulp game he ran last year and had quite a bit of fun. It was interesting to see how he runs a Hero System game.
